Solomon Islands’ Main Hospital Operating Theatres Declare Emergency Amid Supply Shortages

The Solomon Islands Ministry of Health announced on the 2nd that operating theatres at the National Referral Hospital (NRH) have entered a state of emergency. According to New Zealand’s RNZ, the ministry stated in a statement that services have been scaled back due to shortages of surgical consumables and anaesthetic drugs.

“Theatres are now only handling emergency cases, caesarean sections and life-threatening conditions until sufficient supplies are available,” the statement noted. NRH confirmed it is trying to source some urgent medicines from local pharmacies while waiting for supplies from overseas suppliers, which are currently stored in containers at Point Cruz Wharf.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services, along with the National Pharmacy, assured the public they are collaborating with donors and development partners to secure essential medicines and distribute them to healthcare facilities across the country.

The shortages highlight ongoing challenges in supply chain management for the Pacific nation, where reliance on overseas imports and logistical delays often disrupt critical healthcare services. Local officials urged patience as efforts to resolve the crisis continue.
